Not only did Donna and I go to the Maryland Renaissance Festival on Sunday, but my friend Kevin and I went up to the Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival and Yorkfest on Saturday. I came away with the parts to build another cigar box guitar... I'm going to do it a little differently this time. In the first build, we made the neck in Kevin's shop, and I think we tried to get a little too fancy with it. Subsequently, there's a bit of a built-in "whammy bar" effect, in that I can actually bend the neck while playing! It's also more subject to changes in temperature and humidity, and has a tendency to want to drift out of tune.
The new guitar will be a simpler three-string build with a straight white ash neck. The box, and all hardware, will be black. I'll most likely be building this as a fretless with scale markings again (unless I can find something very thin and black to use for frets), and the most basic of electronics -- a piezo disk pickup and volume pot.
My next planned build is a two-string "bass". Of course, I'll be sure to document the construction of both.
