Moment, manufacturer of premium optics for select Apple and Samsung smartphones, have recently updated the firmware in their ground-breaking case for the iPhone 6 family.
Yes, a firmware update for a cell phone case.
You see, the Moment case is more than just a case. It's a bluetooth connected device that adds a real shutter button to the phone, including "half-press" focus control, in addition to a metal bayonet mount for their lenses, and a reinforced steel connection point for a proper neck or wrist strap. The result is a phone camera that works just like a "real" camera.
Until this most recent update, though, the shutter button only worked with Moment's own app, and under iOS 9, there apparently wasn't a way to make it available to other camera apps.
With Apple's opening of the camera protocols in iOS 10, Moment was able to make their shutter button work with the Apple camera app, and by extension, other camera apps as well. So far, I've tested Hipstamatic, Obscura, 645 Pro, and VSCO, as well as Instagram and Facebook.
In addition to the Moment Case for the iPhone 6 family, lens mounts are available for the iPhone 5-series, select iPads, and select Samsung devices. Moment also have a complete line of accessories available through their web site. If you take your iPhone photography seriously, I can heartily recommend that you take a look at the Moment web site. Using the case and lenses can really make iPhone photography much more enjoyable.
